Call for Portfolios: Velopalooza 2015 Poster

Velopalooza 2015 is Vancouver’s sixth annual festival of bike fun taking place June 12 – 28. We’re seeking an artist to design the poster for this year’s event. Applications are due April 3, 2015.

Project Intent

Celebrate biking that’s fun, sociable, and inclusive. Velopalooza is a grassroots festival, where anyone can host a bike ride. It’s a showcase for the creativity of people in Vancouver, a way to bring people together, and a damn good time. We’re not about spandex, racing, machismo, or political statements.

Project Scope

Your job is to design a poster (11 by 17 in) for Velopalooza 2015. The design of the poster will also be adapted to: A handbill (4 by 6 in), a web graphic (approx. 250 by 375 px), and the cover of our printed calendar (8.5 x 11 in). We may also adapt the design to other media, as the opportunity arises. In prior years, we’ve adapted the poster design to ads on buses and SkyTrain, half-inch buttons, tee shirts, and a magazine cover.

You can choose to be involved with the adaptations to the degree that you’re interested in. We have an in-house designer who can do the adaptations. You could also do the adaptations yourself (although this would be volunteer work). We’ll work out a process that respects the integrity of your design.

Design Requirements

While we encourage you to push your creative limits, we do have some required elements.

Designs must include the following:
• Our name: Velopalooza
• Tag line: Two weeks of bike fun
• Dates: June 12 — 28
• Website: velopalooza.ca
• Space for sponsor logos

File Format

While a multi-layer Adobe Illustrator file for the final design is ideal, we welcome all submission formats.

Process & Compensation

Based on the applications, we’ll select three finalists. The finalists will develop a poster proposal ($200 compensation each). The poster proposal must be a reasonably complete version of the overall design. We’ll then select the artist to design a final version ($300 more, for $500 total).

Students

When you’re a talented student artist with a thin portfolio, it can be hard to compete against established artists. To give you a better shot, at least one of the three finalist slots will go to a student. (You must be currently enrolled at a school in British Columbia.)

To Apply

Submit your portfolio or work samples and a couple of sentences stating your interest to info@velopalooza.ca by April 3. 2015.
