By: Lisa CorriveauDid you know that we have one of the largest urban great blue heron colonies in North America right here in our backyard? Stanley Park is home to dozens of herons who build their nests in the trees next to the tennis courts.

They've been nesting for a while & the chicks should be hatched & flapping about in the nests. If you've never been there during nesting season, it's quite an experience.

For more information, visit the heron cam here: http://vancouver.ca/parks-recreation-culture/heron-cam.aspx
or the Stanley Park Ecology Society heron page:

Ride info:

June 13, 10am we'll meet at Science World, departing at 10:30 to ride along the seawall to the park to visit the herons, then continue on to Second Beach for a picnic by 11:30 or noon.

From the meeting point, the ride will be almost entirely on the seawall, all paved, fairly flat. It's 6.5 km from Science World to Second Beach, about a half hour to forty minutes of riding.

What to bring:

A picnic lunch, or money for the concession, a beach blanket, sunscreen, sand toys, your usual beach picnic stuff.

Amenities:

Second Beach has washrooms, a concession, an outdoor pool & a playground.

Parking & transit info:

Pay parking is available at Science World. Transit riders can take the skytrain (2 bikes are allowed per car any time on weekends) or bus #3, #8 or #19 to Main Street-Science World Station.
